Red Bull Straight Rhythm is set! Dungey vs. Stewart vs. Roczen: Who You Got?

Paul Iverson

Red Bull Straight Rhythm 2016 is teeing up a battle of epic proportions among the sport's greatest. After two successful years, Red Bull Straight Rhythm will return to Fairplex in Pomona on October 22. This year’s event will feature a revised format where practice, qualifying and racing will all take place on the same day. Additionally, the finals will take place at night under the lights making for a spectacular new spectator experience. An evolution of the sport of supercross, the event features head-to-head racing on an “unwound” track, where there are no turns, just a 1/2 mile-long straight rhythm section.

The weirdest race in motocross is back. Racers all over the world grew up with their dads hammering into their heads with one mantra: "Jump for show, corner for dough." Speed and advantage on a normal motocross track is gained in turns. Well, sorry Dad, but not at Red Bull Straight Rhythm. It’s one minute of straight-up Supercross, and it’s glorious. But Straight Rhythm is more than a full sprint — anyone can hold the throttle wide open for a minute straight (pun intended). Success at Straight Rhythm requires as much precision as it does all-out speed; literally landing one foot long or short on the wrong jump can spell disaster for riders on this track. It is the quickest race in the sport, and therefore the most unforgiving.

Red Bull Straight Rhythm announces 2015 rider line-up

The final rider lineup has been set for the 2015 Red Bull Straight Rhythm. The 24 competitors will include 2014 champion James Stewart, AMA Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen, Mike Alessi, Andrew Short and several others.

Red Bull Straight Rhythm takes place on October 10 at Fairplex in Pomona.

Twenty-Four of the World’s Top Motocross Riders to Compete in Head-to-Head, Straight Line Motocross event

The full list of competitors for Red Bull Straight Rhythm has been announced, and once again it includes some of the best riders in the world.

To lead the Open Class will be last years winner James Stewart, which will also include Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen, Justin Brayton, Marvin Musquin and Andrew Short, among others. The field will be split into two classes - 16 riders in the Open Class (greater than 250cc) and eight riders in the Lites Class (250cc or less).

The head-to-head, best-of-three racing will take place at the former horse track at Fairplex in Pomona on Saturday, October 10. The 24 riders will race on a 1Ž2-mile rhythm section with no turns, which features 75 jumps and over 400 feet of whoops. General admission tickets are available for $30 and VIP tickets are $150 at www.redbull.com/straightrhythm

James Stewart’s participation in the event will mark his return to professional racing – his last race was Red Bull Straight Rhythm in 2014, which he won. After a year off, he’ll look to come back with a bang and defend his title at the head-to-head event.

This year’s AMA Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey will look to keep his winning streak going on the 1/2 mile, straight track.  Dungey participated in the concept “test” in 2013, and has been a very vocal supporter of the format ever since.  Unable to race in last year’s event, he’ll now see how he takes to the extensive rhythm section in a fully competitive format. Justin Brayton will return to try and improve on his second place finish last year, and Marvin Musquin, who dominated the Lites Class in 2014, will move up to the Open Class. Riders new to this unique format will include Ken Roczen, Andrew Short and holeshot specialist Mike Alessi.

The Lites Class will feature a 10-rider qualifier on Friday, with only eight riders advancing to race on Saturday.  Of the 10-rider field, eight were invited to participate, including Jessy Nelson, Malcolm Stewart and Shane McElrath.  The remaining two riders will earn their spots in a pre-qualifier race at Pala Raceway on October 4, which is open to all pro-license riders.
